Goldman Environmental Prize |
The Goldman Prize is given each year to six environmental heroes from each of six continental regions: Africa,
Asia, Europe, Island Nations, North America and South/Central America. The award stipend is $125,000. An
example of one of this year's winners is Von Hernandez who opposes waste incineration. He helped the Philippines
become the first country in the world to ban waste incineration in 1999. Today, Hernandez is on the forefront of
a heated battle to hold the ban in the face of government corruption and industry pressure. His work has
been held up as a model for waste incineration activists throughout the world.
